Jamie Brinkley – May Runner of the Month

1. What inspires you to run? 💡
When I first started running I read an article about a woman named Joy Johnson. She started running in her 60s and ran 25 consecutive NYC Marathons. She was running marathons in her 80s! I clipped her picture and it is on my bathroom mirror still. Joy showed me that women can be healthy, fit athletes all their lives. That is especially important to me now that I have two beautiful granddaughters. Running is crucial to my mental and physical health and I plan to be running for many, many years . . . . hopefully, I will race with my granddaughters someday.

2. When did you start running? 🕑
I started running in my mid-fifties. My first marathon was in Waco with Chip and Joanna Gaines in 2018.

3. What is your favorite post-race meal? 🍝
I ran a marathon in Salt Lake City, Utah last year. After the race, I ran across a local pizza place that made their pizza with sourdough crust. It was phenomenal! That was my favorite post-race meal ever, and I still think about that pizza.

4. What is your favorite race or event? ⭐
I just ran the Boston Marathon, so I have to say Boston! Close second is the Marine Corps Marathon . . . . I loved that experience . . . . still my marathon PR.

5. Do you have any advice for new or returning runners? 📖
Don’t let your age or lack of experience stop you from running. Find role models and use them for inspiration. Stay disciplined with your training and it will become a habit that you cannot do without. And my favorite motto: Run the Mile You are In.

6. What is one fun fact about you? Or, what are some of your hobbies? 🔨
I love to hike and spend time in the outdoors. I’ve hiked the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim three times, the Narrows and Angels Landing in Zion National Park, and the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage in Spain.
